Masonry & Hardscaping
Patios, walkways, steps and walls built with proper foundations and clean joints, made to look refined for decades.
Overview
Stonework Built for Cape Cod Winters
Frost heave, sandy soil and poor drainage are what crack patios and tip walls on the Cape. Most of the work is below what you see: excavation, a compacted gravel base and the right pitch to carry water away from the house. We get that part right, then finish with stone laid tight and clean.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Pavers or natural stone: which is better on the Cape?
Both hold up well when they're built on a proper base. Natural stone like bluestone and granite has a timeless look. Pavers give you more colors and shapes, often at a lower cost. We'll show you samples and help you choose.
How long does it take to build a patio?
Most patios take one to two weeks, depending on the size, the materials and the site. You'll get a timeline before we start.
What's the best time of year to build?
We build from early spring until the ground freezes. Booking in the winter is the best way to get a spot early in the season.
Why do patios and walkways crack or heave?
Almost always because of a poor base. Frost pushes up on anything that isn't built on enough compacted gravel with proper drainage. That's the part of the job we never cut corners on.
Can you match the stone I already have?
In most cases, yes. We'll look at your existing stonework and find the closest match in material, color and finish.
Do retaining walls need a permit?
In Massachusetts, walls over about 4 feet generally need a building permit and an engineered design. We'll let you know what your project needs.
Do you repair existing walkways, steps and walls?
Yes. We reset heaved walkways, rebuild loose steps and repair stone walls.
How should I take care of my patio in the winter?
Avoid rock salt on bluestone and pavers. Use a salt made for stone surfaces instead. We'll give you care tips when the job is done.
